Discovering Opportunity at Ferrante’s Sunflower Farm
At Community Supports Network, we’re always looking for opportunities that help individuals with disabilities build confidence, develop skills, and become more connected to their communities. Sometimes, those opportunities are found in the most unexpected places.
Recently, Jess Quarello, our Brand Communications Director had the chance to visit Ferrante’s Sunflower Farm, and while it’s easy to be captivated by the beautiful fields that will burst into bloom this August, what stood out even more was the founder’s, Tina Ferrante, commitment to community and the meaningful work happening behind the scenes.
A sunflower farm doesn’t become breathtaking overnight. Long before the flowers bloom, there’s important work to be done—preparing the soil, planting, weeding, maintaining garden beds, harvesting produce, and caring for the property. These hands-on tasks create wonderful opportunities for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, staying active, and being part of something bigger than themselves.
Ferrante’s Sunflower Farm welcomes volunteers to assist with a variety of seasonal projects, including weeding, planting,, cleaning, raking, harvesting, and other outdoor activities. These opportunities allow volunteers to develop practical job skills while contributing to a beautiful local destination.
For individuals supported through CSN’s Supported Employment and Community Inclusion programs, experiences like these can be incredibly valuable. Volunteering helps build responsibility, confidence, communication skills, teamwork, and independence—all while connecting with nature and the local community.
Embracing Community Involvement
One of the things Jess appreciated most during her visit was seeing how the farm embraces community involvement. Their volunteer program is designed for people who simply enjoy being outdoors and making a difference, regardless of previous farming experience.
And then, of course, there’s the reward.
Every August, the farm transforms into a sea of vibrant yellow sunflowers, welcoming families, photographers, and visitors from across New Jersey to experience one of the state’s most beautiful seasonal destinations. It’s a reminder that growth takes time—and that the work we do long before the flowers bloom is often the most important part of the journey.
